For today’s edition of, “One time I saw Cady Heron Gigi Hadid wearing [insert article of clothing here]. So I bought [insert article of clothing here],” replace all blanks with “something sky blue.”
Two weeks ago, on a sunny mid-June day, the unofficial millennial pink ambassador stepped out in head-to-toe icy blue. The model’s cozy Sally LaPointe ensemble — a knit top with silky paper-bag waist pants — was at once on- and off-trend. (Off-trend in that 2017 is inarguably the year of pink, on-trend in that once Gigi wears it, it’s a trend.)
While sky blue hasn’t had quite the same runway presence as its “for the girls” counterpart, the inexplicably gendered hue has been popping up on more and more catwalks as of late. Rodarte’s Paris debut featured a delicate floral print chiffon dress in pretty pastel blue. A skimpy sky blue boilersuit walked at Miu Miu Resort 2018. Among the more memorable pieces at Fulvio Rigoni’s second collection for Salvatore Ferragamo was a pale blue double-breasted maxi dress and a trompe l’oeil slip dress/turtleneck combo. Powder blue dresses also turned up on the Fall 2017 catwalks of Louis Vuitton and No. 21.
At Celine, Phoebe Philo showed edgy, baby blue workwear. Like Gigi, Phoebe went the tonal route, pairing slit-knee trousers with a button-up/duster that breezed apart at the navel. On the model’s shoulders hung a capacious black tote. Phoebe and Miuccia Prada, in particular, seemed intent on a baby blue #rebrand. No longer does the color signal the coming of a boy. It’s 2017 and sky blue belongs to stylish, no-nonsense women making their mark on a man’s world.
