This season, the AW18 inspiration is set against the muddled 1980s – a time where pinstripe suits and shirts were juxtaposed against the subversive red tracksuits and slicked back hair of the rebellious youth of the time.

This sense of unruly play is mirrored in the sturdy wooden forms and expressive painterly backdrop that create the season’s set; a collaboration between artists Fenella Brereton & Abigail Fletcher – and paintings by the designer himself. These paintings are writ large on canvases leaning against the wall, also seen rendered in collection prints on silk shirts and jersey.

A classic Oxford shirt is transformed by a drawstring hem, tailored trousers evolve with the wearer’s desire through metal snap fastenings whilst rugby shirts and shorts are reimagined as luxurious loungewear. Silk, mohair, leather and shearling steer the collection towards luxury whilst technical fabrics such as nylons and coated cottons bring in elements of outdoor pursuits; A breath of fresh air against the buttoned-up tailoring that much of the collection refer- ences.

This collection is about leisure and freedom in its own way; through craft, through expression, through diversity. AW18 doesn’t scream, it’s quiet, it’s con- sidered and it’s right. At a time where the world feels uncertain, DANIEL w. FLETCHER is looking to tradition for guidance; and in doing so creating some- thing new and dictating his own future.
